The researchers at Columbia University and the New York Gnome project have worked on finding alternative digital storage data. Eventually all the clouds in the world will not be enough to hold all our digital information. The team of scientists created a video, computer operating system and a gift card in a single drop of DNA.
The scientist chose DNA, because it has a distinct ability to reorganize and recombine its information in a complete pattern. The DNA can then be broken down into a computer algorithm and generated through computers like a program. A single strand of DNA can hold 730 billion megabytes of data.
Landis only uses the cloud at this point, but hopes that one day the storage room could be condensed into a couple vials of DNA library. Check out a clip about the genetic code of the future.
